Auto insurance

Auto insurance is insurance that protects drivers against losses incurred as a result of car accidents. In California, drivers are required to carry at least a minimum level of personal liability insurance.

Sacramento sad-sack Casey Serin has a rocky history with auto insurance.

At age 18, Casey was involved in a car accident while driving uninsured: "I crashed my car a few months prior and I didn’t have insurance (forgot to send it the paperwork on time)."[1].

He had another accident in 2006, in which his car (a Ford Taurus, according to the now-deleted Earth Mission blog) was totalled, and for which he received a sweet $5000 insurance payout: "Our car was totalled a couple of weeks ago. We finally are receiving the insurance payout of about $5K. Now we must find a car quick!"[2] He invested $3200 of the payout into V-Dubs, his "bittersweet Jetta",[3][4][5] paying $50/month for liability-only auto insurance.[6]

V-Dubs was broken into in April 2007; in the aftermath, Casey revealed that he was once again uninsured: "our auto insurance was canceled due to non-payment."[7]. It is unclear whether his insurance lapsed before, or after, his recent speeding ticket.

As of May 2007, Casey is currently insured: "I bought a new auto insurance policy yesterday for about $550 for six months which required a $180 upfront deposit." [8]
