Comment moderation

Comment moderation is the process by which comments formerly posted to IAFF, FHB, TC and other blogs are released for public view by our favorite failing-forward fix-n-flopper.

Comment moderation times, the interval between a comment being posted and it being released for view, have ranged between 18 and 48 hours on Casey's blogs. The cause of this delay is unknown, although Casey's busy nap schedule may be a factor. FHB comment moderation times are similarly delayed. Casey has claimed that he puts a lot of time into comment moderation, and that use of a PDA-phone allows him to moderate comments while on the toilet.

Recognizing the deadening effect this had on conversation at IAFF -- an alternating pattern of long comment-free droughts followed deluges of substantially-similar comments -- Casey at one point introduced instant commenting for trusted, respectful, registered users. This improved interactivity at IAFF. However, many commenters were unregistered and still subject to moderation delays. In the end, the experiment was deemed only a partial success and not repeated on any later Casey blogs.
