Don't Hate Casey
From CaseyPedia
Don't Hate Casey, or DHC, is arguably one of the strangest phenomena of the Casey Serin saga -- a blog started by award-winning Rogaine spokesman Nigel Swaby in order to paint Serin in a more positive light. The blog's title was actually Casey Serin -- An Alternate Take (changed to "Don't Hate Casey Serin -- Ok, maybe you should..." around June 11th 2007), but it is generally referred to as DHC due to the blog's URL of donthatecasey.blogspot.com[1]
The blog was launched on March 17th, 2007 with the following mission statement:
- Welcome to the Casey Serin safety zone. Have a comment or criticism? Post it here. You'll need to create a Blogger account and join this site first. This site was created as an alternate to Iamfacingforeclosure.com and the Casey Serin "hater" sites where personal attacks and name calling are all too frequent. Feel free to post with no fear of retribution. This is not a fan site. Any constructive feedback is welcome. Comments are unmoderated so discussion, not attacks or hate, can flow in real time. Flame, hate or attack and you will be banned. Enjoy![2]
People came, and they did enjoy, though generally not for the reasons that Swaby anticipated. The mockery started almost immediately when he posted a bizarre thesis entitled "Casey Serin - Not A Zero-Sum Game", which opined:
- The fact of the matter is housing and Casey's situation is not a zero sum game. Nobody went homeless because Casey got a home loan. Countrywide didn't close up shop with Casey's last loan. Casey didn't invent the zero down, stated income, Option ARM - the lenders did. Their business and programs are cyclical and now we happen to be in a tightening cycle. Anyway, enough from me. What do you think of the zero-sum theory being part of the reason Casey inspires so much hate?[3]
Unfortunately for Swaby, one of DHC's first comments was from R-Boy, a professional economist, who proceeded to rip his theory to shreds. This provided the first indication that the new blog wasn't quite working out as he intended. The title of the next post, Down But Not Out - R-Boy versus SLMG, acknowledged this hammering, but Swaby attempted to fight back with a predictably lame ad hominem attack:
- Better stick to that government day job and forget about being an Internet blog debater.[4]
Swaby has used the blog to alternately rail against the Haterz™ and to publish "kiss-and-tell" commentary on his disturbingly close relationship with Serin, occasionally offering Serin sage advice such as this gem regarding pool maintenance:
- What were you thinking Casey? You can't leave water standing or untreated. Otherwise it, well, it turns into that. [...] My point is this is mostly algae caused by the sun.[5]
The same posts revealed that Swaby greatly enjoys his indoor pool, and previously enjoyed his outdoor pond stocked with koi fish. It was never explained how someone on a pin salesman's salary could afford these luxuries, not to mention two BMWs.
Regarding his career as an Olympic pin salesman, Swaby has used the blog to bask in the alleged celebrity status he gained through that endeavor:
- The fringe benefits were enormous. I attended every medals ceremony downtown I wanted to and saw Sheryl Crow, Alanis Morissette, and George Clinton. I was able to attend VIP parties put on by sponsors like Sports Illustrated and had unlimited access to the VIP room of the hottest Olympic club.[6]
DHC's finest hour may have been a post in which Swaby compared the purported "persecution" of Casey and his supporters to the Holocaust, invoking both Godwin's Law and Niemöller's poem First They Came... to reinforce his point:
- Yes, but Casey's a scumbag. He lied on his loans. He deserves to be railroaded! He doesn't deserve the protections of the law. Again a slippery slope. People often wonder how states like Nazi Germany or North Korea or some of the African and South American dictatorships come to be. It happens slowly and with one freedom or objector removed at a time.[7]
Comments at DHC were frequently censored to eradicate any dissenting opinions. On May 16th, 2007, Swaby abruptly removed all comments without prior notice. Afterwards, entire previous posts were deleted -- specifically posts that mentioned Duane LeGate and posts that "outed" specific Haterz™. Since June 2007, DHC has returned to its original purpose as a site where Swaby can talk to himself in an orgy of Serin apologism.
[edit] The falling out with Casey and IAFF moderation duties
After Casey left Galina and went to Australia, here is what Nigel finally confessed on DHC:
There's the full story on the moderation. I've been doing a lot of thinking today. Some additional questions need to be answered and I believe I'm prepared to answer them at this time. If Casey doesn't return quickly, there will be a lot more to come. I've also reconsidered turning the comments back on. So long as you stop attacking me, I'll do it. OK?
Future subjects:
1. Mocha calls.
2. Who is "G?"
3. The reasons behind the Utah trip.
4. The real reason the agreement between Casey and I didn't happen.

[edit] Casey Creates Monster Thread After Backlash From Lupo's Hate Post
Following a post which made FHB co-creator Damion Lupo look like a complete fool, Serin, posting under the title of foreclosurehelpbook.com engages longtime poster Dolph in an at times contentious spin-a-thon. The pinnacle of arrogance and hater-baiting is reached, when Serin posts the very telling run-on-sentence:
"Consideration will also be given to our prior promises, certain family members, the national audience of Dr. Phil, the "gray area", and the the relative return on investment of reverting back to "1st person" and aggressively pursuing "personality-driven Web 2.0 marketing" angle in order to raise the success rates of the traffic-increase efforts, in order to generate reasonable and acceptable amounts of profit from the honest and honorable endeavour of helping individuals who are facing foreclosure, with full intent of the aforementioned profits to be used to pay back "every dirty penny", making right on past wrongs, and creating a stream of passive income for the enjoyment of those who took the risks that the ordinary citizens were unwilling to take and thus will not partake of such blessings."
As of November 3, 2007, "foreclosurehelpbook.com" had removed all commentary from DHC, resulting in re-pastes from able bodied haterz who want to ensure the flow of the story isn't broken by some simple backtracking.
