Fasting

Fasting is the act of enduring without food. It is often undertaken for religious or spiritual reasons.

In November 2006, Casey undertook a 12-hour Facing Foreclosure Fast^[1], devoting his time to spiritual cleansing through the wise words of his favorite personal development gurus:

To facilitate focus and direction I will be doing a first-ever “Facing Foreclosure Fast” from 6pm tonight to 6am tomorrow (12 hours). I have never fasted before, so I am starting with a short time frame.

I will be praying and listening to personal development material. I’ve been wanting to watch The Secret that everybody keeps talking about. I also have The Dream Giver DVD to go with Bruce Wilkinson’s book I just read. And then there is a ton of personal development CDs/MP3s, from Anthony Robins to Zig Ziglar, that I have been wanting to brush up on.

I will be abstaining from food so I can focus and let My Maker direct me and the personal development material to motivate me.

Stung by haters who pointed out that 12 hours without food is basically a long night's sleep, he went on to extend the fast to a daring 24 hours, interrupted only by a solid 8-hour nap:

To those who think 12-hour fast is a joke - you’re right. It was too easy (and NO I wasn’t sleeping, I stayed up till 6am). I came home at 7am and slept in today till 3pm or so. When I got up I decided to continue fasting till 6pm to make it a 24 hour fast.^[2]

Casey reported that "the Fast went pretty good", although the scrawny 150-lb real estate divestor did note that he felt "a bit light-headed and weak".^[3] Casey's modified vegan diet enabled him to quickly and fully recover from the effects of this grueling ordeal.

One of the unintended consequences of fasting was that Casey turned off IAFF comment moderation during this period - of course the comments went absolutely wild and probably led to his unwillingness to ever do so again.
