A Gold Nugget is a small piece of unfinished gold that might be found by a miner or prospector. In nature, gold nuggets are fairly rare as gold is more commonly found in the form of dust or mixed with other minerals in gold ore.

In the context of Casey Serin's life, gold nuggets refers to those rare real opportunities that are delivered along with all the spam and hate mail in his inbox. Casey's desire to be a connections guy leads him to endless pursuit of such gold nuggets:

People email me on a daily basis with opportunities. I actually have too many. Everyday I open my inbox and mine my emails for gold nuggets of opportunities and the makings of a sweet deal.[1]
My inbox still has about 1000 emails to go through. (It’s like panning for gold. I can see the nuggets but it takes time to sift and refine into something of value). I am looking at several strategic partnerships, potential book deal(s).[2]

The metaphor is appropriate. During the California Gold Rush, which centered in the hills just east of Casey's current domicile, many prospectors went broke while trying to "strike it rich" by finding a single large nugget. At the same time, many hard-working people built smaller incomes slowly by meticulously panning for gold dust or working for one of the many large mining or development companies that quickly came to dominate California's gold fields.
