Gray area

Earning money through hard work is generally 100% good.
Robbing banks is generally 100% bad.
It follows then that earning money by working to rob banks, which is essentially what Casey Serin did when he committed mortgage fraud, is in a gray area.
In fact, Casey has repeatedly stated that he thought most of his activities fell into "gray areas," though unlike most people he has not been able to decide how he prefers to spell the word grey/gray. (Both are correct.)
Speaking of his mortgage fraud, he said:
- I honestly didn’t think the stuff I did was that bad. Just grey area type of stuff. Especially since all the people helping me do it (gurus, wholesalers, investors, mortgage brokers) didn’t seem to think there is much to worry about.[1]
He reinforced this at another time:
- NO, I didn’t know I was commiting fraud with my “liar loans”. I just thought it was “gray area” based on the advice I have been given and how common and acceptable this behavior is in the industry.[2]
Speaking of his plans, he said he was going to avoid entering "gray areas" in the future:
- I didn’t go too far with my loans (As in Criminal Activity). It’s more the gray area type of stuff. True, I always felt a little uncomfortable with it. My moral compass didn’t like it, so to be on the safe side, I will probably stay away from this type of stuff in the future.[3]
And with regards to his corporate credit scam opportunity he wrote:
- I’m trying to take advantage of every LEGAL and ETHICAL opportunities I can to get out of my mess but I don’t want to get into GRAY area like I did before. I really need to be getting more legal advice on all this stuff, not just running it by people, but actually pay for quality legal advice[4]
