Jamba Juice
From CaseyPedia
Jamba Juice is a chain of outlets that serve juice drinks, with locations throughout the United States and the Bahamas.Known for their trendy advertising, clean environs, and vibrant colors, the Jamba Juice outlets are able to charge startling prices for what are ultimately simple cups of blended juice. Clever marketing names such as "Peach Perfection" and "Pomegranate Paradise" add to the mystery and allure of their whipped concoctions. Add to that the optional "Boosts" that can be added (with alleged vitamins or other enhancements), and their menu becomes a dizzying collage of intestine-challenging possibilities -- with drinks that can top $7.00 (US) per cup.
Jamba Juice is home to the infamous wheatgrass shot, used frequently by Casey Serin for a nutritional lift, to partially compensate for his erratic eating habits and lack of exercise. Though other commercial juice outlets offer similar wheatgrass drinks, Serin has claimed that Jamba Juice provides the best and most attractive presentation (complete with green plastic serving tray, garnished with an orange slice). Serin has claimed to be a "regular user" of wheatgrass, requiring double the amount of a wheatgrass novice to achieve the same effect, preferring to use the terminology of a drug addict.
A wheatgrass shot costs about the same as a Jack Daniels shot at other beverage outlets. Ironically, daily alcohol consumption (roughly one shot of hard liquor) has been shown to reduce the risk of cardiovascular problems, while the benefits of daily wheatgrass shots are still in dispute.
After the revelation that a $3 wheatgrass shot cost him almost $38 after overdraft charges, Casey's Jamba Juice habit became a running joke on IAFF, to the point where it took a starring role in the post titled "Snow Stops Foreclosure, Redemption Check Cashed, Jamba Juice Had"[1] In that post, Casey offered a modified-vegan-diet-friendly guide to the Jamba Juice menu:
- The only thing I really like in there is Carrot-Orange-Banana juice combination and of course a nice strong 2 ounce shot of wheatgrass. Carrot, Orange and Wheatgrass are the only freshly squeezed juices they have. Everything else has been frozen.
Casey gave further menu advice on an IAFF talkcast:
- You know what? Jamba Juice overall is not as healthy as people might think. It’s definitely better than drinking Coke, but most of that stuff’s frozen, and even though it’s all natural, meaning there’s no added sugar, I like my stuff fresh out of the juicer. So the only thing I really drink there is wheatgrass shots. I also do freshly squeezed OJ and freshly squeezed carrot juice.[2]
On a "business trip" to Utah[3], Casey and pleather-clad solar algae expert Nigel Swaby shared a tender moment at Jamba Juice: Nigel's first wheatgrass shot.[4]
