Rat race

The rat race is a term sometimes used to describe salaried employment, probably due to its connotations of endless fruitless pursuit, something Ratlab understands.

"Rat race" is often used disdainfully by would-be real-estate mogul Casey Serin: "No wonder the majority of people are stuck in the rat race."[1]

In January 2007, Serin began formulating goals for the year ahead:

I’m finalizing my plans for 2007 and am getting ready to take another stab at my big goal that I made back in 2000 after graduating from high school. The goal is to acquire enough income property and/or businesses to get out of the “rat race.”[2]

Serin had, in fact, quit his job in January 2006 to pursue his real-estate investment fantasies, an achievement he later labelled as a "strong success."[3][4] This led many to wonder just how much further out of the rat race it was possible for him to get.

The use of "rat race" may be a CaseySpeak™ variation in which one does not fully escape the rat race until one also successfully avoids any work whatsoever -- a goal Serin appears to be pursuing with some diligence. It is also possible that the rats he so desperately attempts to avoid may be racing from his own sinking ship.

Serin's almost counter-culture disdain for the "rat race," his entreprenurial fantasies, and his harebrained schemes are reminiscent of another comedy creation: Seinfeld character Cosmo Kramer.
