Sydney Morning Herald
From CaseyPedia
The Sydney Morning Herald or SMH is a major Australian newspaper.
In June 2007 the SMH ran an article on newly-arrived runaway child Casey Serin.[1] The article provides an ostensibly supportive view of Serin, but labels him "inept" and "increasingly bizarre". It reports that he presents as "a likeable fast talker", which one hater suggested is journalistic code for "conman."[2] Perhaps the most notorious quote from the article is Serin's convoluted definition of fraud:
- The stuff I did is technically mortgage fraud, but it's not officially called that until someone prosecutes me and proves that that is indeed mortgage fraud.
The newspaper also filmed a video, posted online, in which the visibly stressed Serin issues a series of justifications and self-assurances accompanied by bizarre evasive mannerisms.[3] Of the video, Rob Dawg noted: "Everytime Casey lies he looks down and closes his eyes! Better than a lie detector."[4] Alabama Swamp Donkey analyzed it further:
- Rob called it. Look at the video. When a psychopathic, pathological liar has crossed the line to true madness, they will have to try harder and harder to convince themselves their lies are true. Watch the video. Watch his eyes. The long periods of his eyes being shut after a statement is both him lying, and trying to convince himself that his lie is true.[5]
EN commenter Bemused Guy reported a more visceral reaction to the video: "When [Serin] mentioned his Haterz and slowly smiled - it was a grotesque and very telling moment IMO. It takes a lot to creep me out & that movement succeeded."[6]
