A W-2 job is the shorthand frequently used on IAFF for a stable job which pays a regular salary, deducts taxes and other mandatory government fees and includes (at the very least) workers' compensation and unemployment insurance coverage as mandated by the state. The payment of salary and the total amounts deducted for the various taxes and fees are reported to the employee and to relevant authorities on an IRS Form W-2, which is where the term comes from.

There are other typical types of employment such as an independent contractors (Reported on IRS Form 1099) or self-employed individuals. Casey feels he is currently a self employed entrepreneur, so he has to file the 1099.

Haterz™ have focused on the need for W-2 employment for Casey because the other forms are typically far less stable and require the employee to be highly disciplined about saving money to pay taxes which are not automatically deducted. Casey has repeatedly shown disdain for the W-2 job on many posts and talkcasts. Many Haterz™ feel he doesn't want a W-2 job because the I.R.S. and California Franchise Tax Board may find him and garnish his wages for unpaid taxes. Once a Hater calls him on his W-2 comments, he usually flip-flops and says there is nothing wrong with W-2 employment.

Both Casey and Haterz™ have used this term.
